PMI Election Thoughts

If you’re a PMI member in good standing, you should have received an email to vote for a new PMI Board of Directors. I won’t belabor any writing about the individual candidates; they all seem fantastically qualified.

It appears as though the Board of Directors wants to remove language that would allow a person to be nominated for election by a simple petition of at least 1% of the eligible voting membership.

This provision allows for an insurgent’s movement of sorts if the body politic is sufficiently dissatisfied with the existing candidates brought forth by the Nominating Committee.

Just because “any member in good standing for two consecutive years may submit their interest in being evaluated for a Board position to the Nominating Committee” doesn’t mean that said person may not be subject to political infighting. Although no member has successfully petitioned a position on the ballot since 2000, it should still stay as part of the bylaws so as to prevent an unnecessary concentration of power within the Nominating Committee.

I’m sure these folks have nothing but PMI’s best interests at heart but any organization needs to stay vigilant lest they be caught unawares down the road.
